Mid-Week Mixtapes By Coogidollas & Shadow

cassettes

Right now the music industry is scared shitless to take chances on new music, while the tools to make music get cheaper and cheaper.  As a result, there has been a rebirth of the “mixtape”, or actually, a birth of the “digital mixtape”.  Now pretty much anyone with a laptop can make (or download) some beats and get their American Rap Idol on.

They are called mixtapes because originally they were recorded on cassette tapes.  Eventually that changed when nobody had tape players anymore. DJ’s begrudgingly made the switch to CD’s.  Now, unless you’re some cat on Melrose in baggy daddies from North Not California slangin’ your demo for $2, mixtapes are now collections of mp3s, downloadable for free on the internet.

Mixtapes today may or may not actually be mixed.  Asia Lynn’s Welcome to Betsyvill is very much like a traditional mixtape.  Mixed by DJ Carisma, it actually has songs blended on the turntables.  That’s fresh.  What’s not fresh is a folder full of untagged mp3s.  You barely have my attention enough to download your shit.  Now I’m supposed to spend time tagging and importing that mess into my iTunes.  Step your mp3 tagging game up.

Here are a couple for this week.
